Design/Market Fit
Design/market fit is when the design of your product satisfies the market.
Deiter’s last law of good design is “as little design as possible”. Oohing and ahhing at a design could mean users are distracted, and not focused on completing the task. Good design is aesthetic, but it should also make the product useful.
Part of what makes a good designer is that they can adapt to the needs of the market. The people interacting with and using the design.
A good example is Hacker News.
Hacker News is for software engineers and peripheral folks. The design would be different if it were designed for designers or ice road truckers.
We often perceive the best design as the most aesthetically pleasing design. We can be swindled. The best products, and winning products, don’t always have what we perceive as the best design. The best design is the design that solves the problem in the best possible way.
It’s a misnomer that design should look like this or that. The best design does what it needs to do to fit the group of people it’s the best solution for.
